In 1983, Old River Ranch originated on Old River Road, Ely, IA - near Cedar Rapids, IA. Of course the road name worked well for a ranch name. We began with a small Paint horse breeding operation, constructed stalls in an older cow barn and built an indoor arena. We enjoyed some success in halter while showing in the Iowa Paint Horse Club as well as out of state in MO, MN, OH, SD, etc.

Our move to today's site was in 1993. We have a nice stall barn with 8 stalls, a washrack, a bathroom, large office, hay storage and feed space. This barn is connected to our indoor arena which was just resurfaced in 2008.  Currently we have a round pen in the middle of the arena with room to ride around the outside of that pen.  Both the barn and arena were originally brown but were painted all white in 2007.

Our small hay storage barn was re-sided and roofed in 2008 and has storage for 800 small square bales in the mow. Below are two very large stalls that are used when needed.  Currently one of these stalls serves as a run in for yearlings,while the other is used in our Pembroke Welsh Corgi dog breeding operation. Our pasture has a 15'X50' open shed and there is a copy of that shed in one of our large turnout areas to the east of the house.

We have about 7 acres in pasture. There is a total of 6 very large pens for turnout. One we use to ride in outside. These pens were fenced in 2008 with horse mesh fence and white rope electric. The pasture fence was started with new field fence and white rope electric but winter came sooner than we wanted it to - doesn't it always??!! The "To Do" list has "finish pasture fence" at the top so hopefully that will happen without further delay.

Currently we are dispersing our broodmares and sold our stallion last year. We stood stallions for over 27 years so now it's time to concentrate on the horses we have that need training. All different ages comprise our "herd" now, so don't hesitate to contact us about what is available.
